Forget moving to Manchester or Birmingham – Goods Yard by award-winning social impact developers Capital&Centric is set to transform Stoke, with 170 apartments, work spaces, shops, bars, outdoor areas and gardens and eventually a hotel. The £60m development, which is located next to Stoke-on-Trent train station, is set to open early next year. Wanna move in? Sign up for updates. They’re also looking for independent traders and creative businesses to set up shop here - drop them a line and be part of it.
Capital&Centric also plans to reimagine Brutalist concrete structure Midway Car Park in Newcastle into 100 one-to-three bed apartments plus a gym, mini-cine and lounge.
👩🏻🎓 Staffs Uni Unveils New Identity. In a move aimed at signalling it’s not just a university in the region, but a university for the region, Staffs Uni has rebranded to the University of Staffordshire. Wanna study here? There’s an Open Day on 19/10 at the Stoke-on-Trent campus and 26/10 at the Stafford campus. More details here.
🍝 Three AA Rosettes for The Flintlock. Stoke’s foodie scene just keeps getting more exciting – and now The Flintlock at Cheddleton, helmed by chef Thom Bateman, has just received three AA Rosettes, putting it in the top 10% of restaurants in the country. It will now be going a la carte. Bateman is set to open a new restaurant on the same site, Après.
🏪 Old Woolies in Longton Revamped. It’s stood empty for the last 16 years but the site of the old Woolworths (who remembers getting their pick ‘n’ mix from here?) is having a refurb, with the windows and canopies painted and a new sign at the archway entrance to Longton Exchange. PS: don’t miss the Ha-longton Spooky Countdown (23/10-29/10), where they’ll give away daily prizes from the shops.
🎸 New Music Pilot for Disadvantaged Young People. Young people in Stoke showing musical talent from low income families could be eligible for one of 60 places from music education charity Young Sounds UK’s Music Opportunities pilot programme. It’s being backed by Stoke-on-Trent City Music Service.
💼 Recognising Local Businesses. Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Business Improvement District (BID) is set to host the 2024 LoveNUL Business Awards on 24/10 at the Denise Coates Foundation Building at Keele University. Good luck to all involved.

🏺Good Vibes Only: A Word from Helen, Writer at The Knot
What are you up to this week? I’m looking forward to finally watching Bright Lights Over Bentilee (until 12/10), produced by the mighty Deb McAndrew (loved her on Corrie as an indie art student who was Curly’s flatmate). Also can’t wait to sample the Mexican fare at new Hanley restaurant Fiesta (the cauliflower tinga tacos sound soooo good) and I’m really hoping that the Goods Yard opening date of “early 2025” doesn’t get pushed back as I want to get coffee at new cafe/bar Signal Box.
