Belstaff Returns to Stoke-on-Trent
Belstaff is a fashion brand founded in Longton in 1924, famous for iconic motorcycle jackets worn by the likes of Steve McQueen. In May it returns to Gladstone Pottery Museum for an exhibition.
Think Stoke-on-Trent brands and you’ll likely name ceramics brands like Wedgwood, Spode, Portmerion, Steelite, Duchess China and many others. To get into the present day you’ll no doubt name Bet365 and you might venture towards Rocester to claim JCB.
Unless you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Stoke-on-Trent you may not namecheck fashion brand Belstaff, well known for motorcyle jackets. At 100 years old, the brand has stood the test of time and has a strong following for their made to last gear that is often intended for outdoor pursuits like motorcycle riding or race car driving.
On May 25th and 26th, the brand returns to it’s home in Longton to celebrate its centenary. Now back under British ownership with petrochemicals billionaire Jim Ratcliffe the brand looks to be reconnecting to its heritage. Roots that began in Longton in 1924 and production in Silverdale, before becoming headquartered in Italy.
Belstaff intends to celebrate it’s history with a vintage fair, bringing Belstaff collectors together, a spotlight on up and coming design talent and an event for people that once worked at Belstaff in Stoke.
It’s a chance for the people of Stoke-on-Trent to celebrate a brand born and created here, by the people here. Whilst there are no head offices or production for Belstaff in Stoke, it remains a chance for people to reflect on our history of creativity that doesn’t just revolve solely around Pottery, but in fashion too.
The Belstaff ‘Our First 100 Years’ Exhibition will take place on May 25th and 26th at Gladstone Pottery Museum. They are also casting for modelling talent for the day. See the flyer below.
