Fans Celebrate John Rudge’s 80th Birthday with Statue Unveiling at Vale Park, Burslem
Port Vale Fans gather to honour the manager who transformed the club
Port Vale fans and football enthusiasts alike gathered today for a momentous occasion—the unveiling of a 17ft bronze statue of legendary Port Vale manager John Rudge. This celebration coincides with his 80th birthday, marking a significant milestone for both the man and the football club he led from 1983 to 1999.
The statue, which depicts Rudge in his trademark flat cap, directing from the touchline, was made possible by a fundraising campaign that saw £100,000 raised by fans, spearheaded by the Port Vale Supporters Club. It now stands proudly at the Hamil Road fan zone at Vale Park, where it will serve as a lasting tribute to one of the club’s greatest figures.
John Rudge is credited with taking Port Vale to the highest league position in its history, with memorable victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, and local rivals Stoke City. His influence at the club went beyond tactics; he was known for nurturing talent, generating millions in transfer revenue, and securing three promotions and three trips to Wembley. Sir Alex Ferguson once praised him, saying Vale fans should “get on their knees and thank the Lord for John Rudge.”
Port Vale Supporters Club chair, Mark Porter, explained the significance of the statue: "I just thought that probably the greatest manager the football club's ever had deserved to be recognised and honoured.” He added that it was a fitting tribute to Rudge, who would now be able to see this legacy while he is still alive – something often missed with posthumous honours.

The unveiling ceremony took place at 3pm on 21/10, with fans gathering from as early as 2pm to witness the moment. Alongside Rudge were some notable names, including former Port Vale players and local celebrities such as Jonathan Wilkes, all paying homage to the man who has become synonymous with Port Vale and the city of Stoke-on-Trent.
Matt Hancock, Port Vale’s chief executive, emphasised the profound impact Rudge has had on the club and the wider footballing community. "Rudgie is synonymous with Port Vale, with Stoke-on-Trent as a city, and with the football world as a whole. He’s such a humble, kind, and normal man. If anyone deserves a statue, it’s John.”
This statue becomes only the second to be erected at the stadium, joining that of Roy Sproson, Port Vale’s record appearance holder who made 837 starts for the club. Positioned on a Staffordshire blue brick plinth and surrounded by feature paving, the statue is a permanent reminder of Rudge’s legacy at the club.
While the unveiling was the main event of the day, the celebrations for John Rudge will continue 26/10, when Port Vale take on AFC Wimbledon. Rudge will be meeting fans at his statue at 1.15pm before heading onto the pitch ahead of kick-off.
For the people of Burslem and Port Vale fans everywhere, today was a day to celebrate not only the achievements of John Rudge but also his continued presence as club president, where his influence is still felt throughout Vale Park.
The unveiling of this statue ensures that future generations will remember and honour the man who transformed Port Vale into a competitive force in English football.
