🏮 Light up the Centenary Lantern Parade. 21/03, meet at 5.45pm for a 6pm start, Stoke Event Square. A centenary celebration of the last 100 years of life in Stoke, this B-Arts event will feature willow lanterns, projections, walkabout performances and be led by the Stoke Elk puppet. The parade will start outside Stoke Library and finish with free refreshments at Stoke Minster. If you'd like to make a lantern for the parade, check the website for updates on free drop-in workshops - but don’t worry, there are plenty of spare lanterns if you can’t make the dates. Admission free.
🧁 It’s the Artisan Spring Market. 08/03 & 09/03, 10am-4pm, Middleport Pottery. Browse the wares of local makers at this indoor artisan market for Stoke-made gifts, handmade homewares, original artworks and home baked treats. Admission free.
🎸 A Night of Bob Marley. 13/02, 7.30pm, Victoria Hall. Reggae legend Bob Marley would have turned 80 this year (he died of melanoma aged 36 in 1981) but his music lives on. Direct from London’s Adelphi Theatre, Michael Philips will be performing hits including Three Little Birds, I Shot the Sheriff, Jammin’ and Buffalo Soldier at Legend: The Music of Bob Marley, a two hour-long tribute to a unique star. Tickets from £22.
🌳 Tree Walks at Trentham. 19/02, 26/02, 05/03 & 12/03, 1pm-3pm, Trentham Estate. Led by Trentham’s wildlife ranger, walkers will learn how to identify trees without leaves by recognising bud, bark, branch, and canopy shape. Admission £20 (includes entry to the gardens) or £5 for Trentham members.
🍻 Cheers! It’s the Burton Beer and Cider Fest. 27/03-29/03, 12pm-11pm daily, Burton Town Hall. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Burton and South Derbyshire CAMRA branch, and to celebrate, there will be 135 cask ales - 50 from local breweries – on offer. There’s live music too. Tickets £12 27/03, £15 28 & 29/03.
💪 Pit Power. 06/03, 7.30pm, New Vic. With the main stage a replica of the pit camp that the North Staffordshire Miners’ Wives Association Group (NSMWAG) set up at Trentham Colliery, The Miner Birds pays tribute to the females who mobilised during the 1984 miners’ strike and continue fighting for their communities. Tickets £15.
😈 Alternative 80s. 01/03, 7.30pm, Artisan Tap. Forget Kylie, Jason and Rick Astley and all the other cheesy 80s artists. You can expect punk, goth and New Romantic hits at this Stoke venue’s first Strange 80s evening. Tickets £7, £5 advance.
🚶 Scale Staffs Three Peaks. 15/02; meet at Gradbach Car Park between 9am and 9.15am. Blow the cobwebs away taking in the county’s three highest peaks on a 16-mile walk that will see you summiting The Roaches, Oliver and Cheek’s Hill in ascending order.
