Rise to the Challenge: Mow Cop Killer Mile Opens for 2025 Entries
Staffordshire’s Toughest Race is Back – Are You Ready?

One of Staffordshire’s most famous and gruelling races is back for another year, and registration is now open. The legendary Mow Cop Killer Mile returns on Thursday, May 8th, offering runners the chance to take on one of the steepest challenges in the region.
Now in its 37th year, the race attracts runners of all abilities who are eager to conquer the demanding course. Participants will face a relentless 570-foot climb, with sections reaching an intense 25 percent gradient. The challenge is what makes this race so iconic, drawing in both serious athletes and those looking for a unique test of endurance.
This year’s event is set to be bigger than ever thanks to a sponsorship deal with Middleport-based document management company Chaffinch. Their support has allowed for a full rebranding of the event, a brand-new website, dedicated social media channels, and promotional video content that showcases the race’s thrilling experience.
The event features multiple categories, ensuring there is an opportunity for everyone to take part. Junior races, club runners, and fun runners will all have their chance to tackle the famous hill. Every participant will receive a commemorative medal, while cash prizes await those who break existing race records. The fastest male and female finishers in the Elite Race will be awarded, alongside the first under-18 runner and the top three overall. Trophies will also be given out in various age categories and for the first finishers in the Fun Runs and Junior Race.
Chief Executive Officer Alastair Machin expressed excitement about this year’s race. “This iconic event, known for its challenging uphill route, is back and ready to welcome runners of all abilities. Last year, an incredible 668 people of all ages took part, and this year, we want to see even more. Places are limited with only 1000 spots available, so we urge people to register as soon as possible.”
Event organiser Geoff Pettengell of Mow Cop Runners is eager to see another strong turnout. “We’re thrilled that entries have opened for this year’s Killer Mile. For an event like this steeped in history, it’s always an incredible experience seeing runners take on the challenge and push themselves to the limit. The first race all those years ago saw 95 runners take part – this year, we’re hoping to fill every space. Whether you’re racing for a personal best through a running club or just for fun, this is an event you won’t want to miss!”
Entry fees remain affordable, making this historic race accessible to all. The official website has full details on pricing and registration.
