🍣 Panko & Sushi to Open at Goods Yard. Soon, you’ll be able to get your chopsticks round some sashimi in Stoke, as new restaurant Panko & Sushi is set to bring some Japanese flavours to this fab canalside neighbourhood. Set to open its doors later this year, it’s taking over a 1,650 square feet commercial unit on the ground floor of the Goods Yard apartment building.
🏠 Council Identifies Surplus Sites to Support New Housing. Land and buildings owned by Stoke-on-Trent City Council have been reviewed to help identify areas where new homes could be built, with 11 sites surplus to requirements put forward for consultation. They are a mix of vacant commercial buildings, former council service properties and industrial land. This includes the former Ball Green High School site, which has been vacant since closing in 1988.
🥨 Win Free Oatcakes From Foley. Foley Oatcakes recently changed hands, and the new owner and local lad, Tony Davis, is giving one lucky winner free oatcakes for a year! Just like or follow their Facebook page and share this post. They’ve also recently launched a 20% discount on hot food for emergency services personnel when they’re in uniform. Check ‘em out at the main shop located on King Street in Fenton (open Wednesday to Sunday), and Longton Market (open Wednesday, Friday & Saturday). Winner will be announced 14/07.
🧑 New partnership Approach to Boost Adult Skills. Stoke-on-Trent City Council has approved a new plan to help more adults gain the skills they need to find and stay in work. The plan aims to raise skill levels across the city and support more residents into better jobs by collaborating with partners in education, training and employment. It will help make sure more people can take advantage of local job opportunities and contribute to a growing city economy. More info on the city council’s post-16 employment and learning hub here.
🥨 Good Vibes Only: A word from Helen, writer at The Knot
Whether you prefer to enjoy your scones topped with jam or cream first (it’s definitely the former for me) or favour a flat white over a cuppa (guilty again), you’re invited to put the kettle on and brew up for the Big Centenary Tea Party to mark the city’s 100th birthday. By taking part, you could help Stoke set a world record as it gears up to organise the biggest event of its kind yet, with more than 80 venues already signed up to host tea parties.
Keep it low-key by inviting a few friends round to yours, organise one through your community group, business or school, or get into the spirit of things by joining a registered hub. Registration is open until 02/07 so there are just three days to put your name down to scoff scones and help our city secure that world record.
We can’t think of a better excuse to drink tea and savour the odd scone or three. How about a Stokie twist on a classic English tradition with a savoury course of cheese and bacon oatcakes before you dig into the sweet stuff?
