The palpable stink of Walley’s Quarry has caused residents living near the site much distress over the past few years, with complaints dating back to around 2020. The foul odours will soon disappear as the landfill, which is located off Cemetery Road close to a number of houses, hasn’t accepted waste since last Friday, as “further operation of the site may result in significant long-term pollution.”
Several local groups have put pressure on the site’s owners, Red Industries, by urging people to report smells to The Environment Agency and holding protests outside the quarry. One group keen to hold Walleys to account, Knutton Neighbours Community Group, celebrated the fact that the only lorries now entering the area will contain capping off soil rather than waste.
The same group also singled out their local MP’s hard work. “A massive thanks to Adam Jogee MP for getting this for Newcastle-under-Lyme in 146 days post election.” The quarry now has two months to appeal against the Closure Notice. If it does, let’s hope it’s quickly thrown out…
